Volunteer Program

Shippensburg Area School District values our community members. We are excited that you want to become a volunteer for our District! The purpose of this website is to provide you information on what steps you need to take in order to become a volunteer. Further information and required forms are included in the Volunteer Handbook.  Handbook follows the Board Policy #916 - Volunteers.

Annual Forms for All Volunteers

The following forms need to be completed on an annual basis by all volunteers:

Volunteer Types

WHAT TYPE OF VOLUNTEER DO YOU WANT TO BE?

  • Volunteers – is an adult who voluntarily offers a service to the school district without receiving compensation from the district.  A volunteer is not a school employee. 
    • Position Volunteer – an adult applying for or holding an unpaid position with a school or a program, activity or service, as a person responsible for the child’s welfare or having direct volunteer contact with children.  Examples include, but are not limited to, field trip chaperones, tutors, coaches, activity advisor, etc.
      • The Superintendent or Designee must approve all Position Volunteers.
      • Clearances and TB Test are Required for all Position Volunteers. 
    • Guest Volunteer – an adult who voluntarily provides a service to the district, without compensation, who: (1) works directly under the supervision and direction of a school administrator, a teacher or other member of the school staff; and (2) does not have direct volunteer contact.  Examples include, but are not limited to, volunteering to assist in classroom celebrations, school assemblies, or school concerts, reading to students, collecting tickets at sporting events, working concession stands, participating in “Career Day,” etc.   
      • The Building Principal or Designee must approve all Guest Volunteers. 
      • Clearances and TB Test  are NOT required for all Guest Volunteers
    • Volunteer Coaches should contact the Athletic Department for assistance.

Information Specific to New Position Volunteers

The following are requirements to become a POSITION Volunteer:

  • Tuberculosis Test - SASD will offer FREE testing on 8/27/24, 9/16/24, 3/3/25, and 4/1/25, from 8:00 am - 2:00 pm at Shippensburg Area Intermediate School   Please call your building nurse to schedule an appointment.   Testing may also be done by your own physician at a cost.
  • Current (less than five years old) PA Child Abuse Clearance (Act 151) (FREE) – Click Here
    Current (less than five years old) PA State Police Criminal Record Check (Act 34) (FREE) – Click Here
    Current (less than five years old) FBI Criminal Background Check (Act 114)  (you will need service code 1KG6XN when registering)– Click Here
    The FBI Criminal Background Check is NOT required for any volunteer that has been a continuous resident of Pennsylvania for the past 10 years. In lieu of getting the FBI clearance you will need to complete the Volunteer Affidavit. This Affidavit can be found below or in the Volunteer Handbook.
  • Approval by The Superintendent or Designee.
