The Shippensburg community view the school district facilities with a great deal of pride, while being supportive of building and maintenance schedules and projects.

The Maintenance and Operations Department is staffed by school custodians (cleaning), a grounds crew (landscaping and playing fields), and a maintenance workers (heating/cooling systems, plumbing, electrical systems).  Each area has a specific job description which contributes to the care and upkeep of our District facilities and grounds.

Asbestos Management Plan

The Shippensburg Area School District, in compliance with the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA), has an Asbestos Management Plan in place. The plan is available for your review in each of the school offices.

The Shippensburg Area School District performs surveillance activities in reference to the asbestos that is present in the District’s buildings every six months. The District has had a private environmental firm perform the three-year asbestos re-inspect ion of the District’s buildings as required by AHERA. Contact the Director of Operations and Maintenance for information regarding the most recent three-year re-inspection.

It is very important that you review the Asbestos Management Plan before you conduct any repair, renovation or demolition activities within any of the District buildings so that you are aware of the locations of the asbestos-containing materials.  You are required to contact the Asbestos Coordinator/Director of Maintenance and Operations before you conduct any activities that may disturb any asbestos-containing materials in our District’s buildings.

Integrated Pest Management Program

The Shippensburg Area School District uses an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach for managing insects, rodents, and weeds.  Our IPM approach focuses on making the school building and grounds an unfavorable habitat for these pests by using the most appropriate pest management techniques to address the problem. The techniques can include increased sanitation, modifying storage practices, sealing entry points, physically removing the pest, and making the school buildings and grounds an unfavorable habitat.  We routinely monitor the school building and grounds to detect any pests that are present.

From time to time, it may be necessary to use pesticides registered by the Environmental Protection Agency to manage a pest problem. Notices will be posted in these areas 72 hours prior to application and for two days following the application.

If you have questions or concerns about the IPM program, please contact the Director of Operations and Maintenance.
