Shippensburg Area Intermediate School Building History
The Shippensburg Area Intermediate School was opened in 2007, and serves grades 4 and 5. The school was created due to increasing population and enrollment within the district. SAIS is the only two-story school building in the district. The school merged faculty from James Burd Elementary School and Nancy Grayson Elementary School, and both the students and staff transitioned to the new school in February 2007. In the first year, the enrollment was 463 students.
The land was purchased from Mr. and Mrs. Paul Ritchie, Shippensburg residents. As part of the land purchase, the school district agreed to add an environmental component to the property. Our walking trail, bird houses, and plant area is maintained by volunteers and district staff. There is an outdoor seating area for classes to enjoy the beautiful grounds. Recreational options for school and community, a disc golf course was established as well.
